Sphinx Pose

The Gentle Heart Opener

Spine and heart

Sphinx Pose is a gentle, restorative backbend that passively strengthens the spine and opens the heart center.

Unlike its more intense variation, Seal Pose, Sphinx is accessible to most practitioners and provides a therapeutic compression for the lumbar vertebrae, promoting spinal health and flexibility.

Lie prone on your abdomen with your legs extended behind you. Place your forearms on the mat with your elbows directly under your shoulders and your palms facing down. Gently press through your forearms to lift your chest and upper torso, creating a soft, natural arch in your lower and middle back. Keep your neck long and your gaze soft.

This pose offers a gentle compression to the lumbar spine, which stimulates circulation and nourishes the vertebral discs. It strengthens the muscles along the spine, opens the chest and shoulders, and can help alleviate minor lower back pain. As a heart opener, it encourages vulnerability and emotional release, counteracting the effects of slouching and forward-focused postures.

Hold Sphinx Pose for 2 to 4 minutes. Practice it 3 times a week to build spinal resilience, improve posture, and cultivate a sense of compassionate openness.
