Traditional Indian mace

Physical training

The Mudgar (मुद्गर), a traditional Indian mace, has been used for centuries in yoga, martial arts (mallakhamba), and physical training. Linked to Hanuman and Bhima in Hindu mythology, it symbolizes strength, discipline, and purification.

Benefits of Mudgar

Builds functional strength (shoulders, wrists, core).
Improves balance and coordination.
Boosts blood circulation (circular motions).
Purifies energy channels (linked to Hanuman in Hinduism).
Gentle alternative to weightlifting.

What is Mudgar Yoga?

Mudgar Yoga class is a traditional Indian practice that uses a mudgar (a wooden or metal mace) to combine physical exercise with spiritual discipline. Rooted in ancient Hindu traditions, the mudgar was originally a weapon but evolved into a tool for strength training and yoga. This practice focuses on controlled movements, breath synchronization, and mental focus, making it a holistic workout for the body and mind.

  • Design: A short-handled wooden or metal club (typically 50 cm to 1 m long).
  • Difference from Gada:
    • The Gada (long mace) is swung with two hands.
    • The Mudgar (shorter) allows precise one-handed movements.

Key aspects of Mudgar Yoga include:

  • Dynamic Swings & Rotations – Builds shoulder, wrist, and core strength.
  • Breath Awareness – Links movement with pranayama (yogic breathing).
  • Mythological Connection – Associated with Hanuman and Bhima, symbolizing power and devotion.
  • Low-Impact Fitness – A gentler alternative to heavy weightlifting.

Ideal for those seeking functional strength, flexibility, and a deeper cultural connection to yoga.

Spiritual Symbolism of Mudgar

Destruction of Ego – The mudgar, wielded by Hanuman in Hindu epics, symbolizes the crushing of ignorance and arrogance, mirroring the yogic path of self-mastery.

Purification of Energy – Its circular movements are said to cleanse nadis (energy channels), aligning with yoga’s goal of balancing prana (life force).

Discipline & Devotion – Like Hanuman’s unwavering focus, Mudgar Yoga cultivates mental clarity and dedication (bhakti).

Union of Strength & Spirit – The physical weight represents life’s burdens, while lifting it mindfully reflects overcoming challenges with grace.

Mythical Legacy – Tied to warriors like Bhima, it embodies transforming raw power into spiritual resilience.

Basic Mudgar Exercises

Gentle Flow Yoga combines the fluidity of movement and the stillness of staying in postures. Creating a relaxed flow of poses that synchronise with one another comfortably makes for an invigorating Gentle Flow Yoga. Keeping in touch with calm energy, the sequences are designed to create deeper awareness of different sets of muscles involved in different poses.Allowing intuition of the body to decide the moves that determine a sequence is the hallmark of Gentle Flow Yoga. When postures are conjoined in respect of the space they create within the physical realm and the nurturing they bring to the spine and joints is a superbly luxurious experience. Enhanced by meditation, this form of Yoga helps realize the true meaning of ‘satchitananda’ or blissful nature of the self.
